Maïlo

Marie-Laure Vareilles

Photomontages, stories of the world, and poetic compositions born of real-life scenes, travels, and encounters.

Maïlo, artist name of Marie-Laure Vareilles, composes photomontages where the imagination always remains anchored in reality. Since she was 19, she has traveled the world with her camera and collected thousands of images from scenes experienced, places she has visited and people she has met.

His works invite everyone to invent their own story: they combine the beauty of the world, the changes in our societies, the diversity of cultures and the fragility of the planet. Between visual poetry, urban impression and humanist outlook, Maïlo constructs a sensitive, committed universe deeply focused on living together.

Driven by the desire for discovery, Marie-Laure Vareilles travels through a multitude of countries and collects, throughout her travels, photographic material nourished by direct experience of reality. Photomontage is obvious: it allows him to translate the beauty of the world and its transformations through a unique creative process.

All the images used come from real scenes: places crossed, fragments of cities, landscapes, faces, crowds and presences encountered. By recomposing them, Maïlo creates a dialogue between truth and imagination. It gives birth to dream worlds, but never disconnected from reality.

Beyond their aesthetic dimension, his works carry a message. By mixing continents, generations and temporalities, the artist becomes witness to a changing world. His compositions evoke contemporary societal, environmental and human issues, always with subtlety, poetry and sensitivity.
